Two blog posts in three days, it’s a miracle! I wish I could say it was because I’ve been extra inspired lately, but mostly I’ve just been working around the clock. I’ve also been photographing a lot of sports lately, which has been improving my instincts when shooting action. After a season’s worth of basketball with about five games a week, I’d really been looking forward to shooting the state championships. Unfortunately that didn’t work out for me, and while I was disappointed at first, it did give me a free Saturday to shoot a local Golden Gloves boxing championship.
This is the first time I’ve seen a boxing match, never mind photographed one. It was a local amateur match with twenty fighters, and thankfully the organizers agreed to let me have locker room access. Despite knowing very little about boxing, I knew the fighters would be wrapping their hands and getting in the right state of mind for their match. I’m glad I asked for the access. Initially I’d assumed I’d get turned down for it, but I think it added a new dimension to the images I got. Here’s a mix of the action and behind the scenes.
